Access to clean water is essential because we all need to drink, wash, cook and clean.
But when communities don’t have access to clean water, they could spend hours walking every day to collect water for their families. Unfortunately even then, the water that they obtain is quite contaminated.
There are many communities worldwide that don’t have access to sanitary environments and basic toilet facilities. The result? Affected communities remain poor and prone to diseases.
Good Neighbors Australia seeks to change that.
WATER & SANITATION
Why is Water So Important?
At Good Neighbors Australia we believe that water is one of the most important elements in ensuring that communities live fulfilled and healthy lives.
That’s why we approach this issue in 2 ways.
One – we build the infrastructure and physical resources like wells and toilets. But providing access to services isn’t enough – in some parts of the world there is little or no awareness of good hygiene practices and their role in daily life.
Two – by raising awareness about Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), we help community members understand and practice hygienic behaviour in a resilient and appropriate way.
A charity donation will support many communities and address the issues of water, sanitation and health.
Good Water Project
We are currently working with fellow Good Neighbors entities in Africa to provide clean water and sanitation through our Good Water Project.
Access to Clean Water
Clean water and good sanitation practices lead the way for better lives. That’s why we work to provide better access to clean water.
We consult with community members and experts to build accessible, sustainable and affordable solutions to achieve this. With the help of charity donations, we work to install and maintain wells, water taps, water pumps, water tanks, water filters and purification tablets.
We also organise local committees to ensure the self-sustained operation and maintenance of the water facilities.
WASH Education & Better Facilities
While sanitation and having clean water are fundamental, education is equally as important.
Our WASH campaigns raise awareness and educate communities about better hygiene care. We also implement facilities including toilets and hand-washing facilities as part of this program.
Having these facilities at schools allow students to focus on their education. Toilet facilities also help girls maintain menstrual hygiene and ensure that periods don’t affect their school attendance.
